Why wear a poppy

And held one forth, but I shook my head
0 ^$ y+ k7 l3 @1 uThen I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare
$ C7 o3 G1 i1 B% z0 eHer face was old, and lined with care, 3 E+ j% k/ c& b, h3 X. ]6 r+ s
Yet beneath the scars, the years had made ( R7 v* v5 I) L/ F: H
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
; i6 z0 O* T9 T# i* |' d( W+ U% _% ?7 D% q; ~+ M
A boy came whistling down the street 1 |& g; U/ h+ i+ e0 r
Bounding along on his carefree feet
+ D0 b9 b7 s+ s! dHis smile was full of joy and fun" f' ?! l! t2 C" P
“Lady” he said, “can I have one?
8 c: n; o" B2 v- cAs she pinned it on I heard him say
. O. ~) C& N& T4 d. x“Why do we wear the poppy today?”
* s  K6 x- ~; pThe lady smiled in her wistful way : g* P. }3 t  Y) N- ^' e
And answered “this is remembrance day”
6 q1 K, R9 s/ t3 Q4 k9 H0 y# _/ I. @
“The poppy is the symbol for the, : m1 z) ^9 a. v/ q
The gallant men and women who died in the war”.
/ v( {  S$ U; P& B  q% X “And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see”
% a4 Z4 H5 S7 H" _
8 D/ }3 B/ y0 i& h' c0 f; K. D6 X* B“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes,
- t, R; v  O, w" W  \) ~6 `. rHe loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about” # \* q! @, s% z8 }8 A0 X' i7 P: c
As the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”,
5 b# i) B8 i6 d- O7 _He was fine and strong with a boyish smile, 0 _) Z6 a0 k5 S  X9 S7 N
But he seemed to be with us a such a short while 8 {4 @2 s) A2 y: r0 c# ~4 }0 Q
When the War broke out he went away 5 A# T, V& |" d. }4 o! o( b# z
I can still remember his face that day 0 x8 E# J5 O' }5 ^) y4 A9 F' X
When he smiled at me and said goodbye 9 c9 g7 r' ~6 m
“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry”
" L9 K0 y4 U4 s8 O0 n3 p) ?
& u1 K# R1 @3 r, }But the War went on and he had to stay
" u4 {* i1 P1 x' i$ qAll I could do was wait and pray . {5 o4 V6 T/ L& m1 \
His letters told of an awful fight
' t7 n& y6 q7 r7 R, Z% @* k) kI can see it still in my dreams at night
6 \$ V  q6 h" a1 j$ j6 v' pWith the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire
2 I3 X1 N! h& P3 J- k& }And the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire 6 M7 a+ {8 K4 Z0 ?  }' q
Until at last the War was won
# Q5 K) h- t  j" U$ }( B$ [$ s1 I6 ZAnd that is why we wear the poppy son
' f: J0 Q4 L& E2 @3 j$ M. Z2 Q# H8 a+ k. J4 n
The small boy turned as if to go
) e- r) t" d# iThen stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know” 4 K+ {. U4 m, Z
That sure did sound like an awful fight
: D# d4 l0 y1 D3 A) q/ @, r, [ “But your son, did he come home all right”?
0 L. `: w+ N  p1 P4 FA tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head 2 M! g+ ^3 i# H. K3 h  |+ y# a! ~
But didn’t speak.
( X- K: [  Q. ?6 o4 b
& _- e" Q$ n# l! nI slunk away, head bowed in shame, 3 U* t% @  `( p1 S) P* |. o+ P
And if you were me, you’d have done the same, 8 z7 H: R7 j+ O" c
For our thanks in giving is often delayed
& [- h7 N+ x! `( ?+ L5 cThough our freedom was bought by the legions who paid.
8 k  @, w/ o8 K) t& X. _7 t+ W$ D9 @( k4 [# s$ O) |& D/ G! D
And so, when you see a poppy worn
8 x) Y/ [" k" [2 i2 BLet us reflect on the burden borne
: s- I6 |! |" T" d! jBy those who gave their precious all $ U3 z$ J6 G  \8 p, _
When asked to answer their countries call 9 L& a7 [- k' ]* T1 @
That we at home, in peace may live
7 [& t! i% m1 k  a, gThen wear a poppy, remember, and give.
